Objectives

The mission was threefold. Firstly, to resurface an expansive 4,000m² area due to issues associated with the existing anti-skid system. Secondly, the project needed to be executed with the utmost care to ensure that the port’s operations remained uninterrupted. Lastly, we aimed to implement a robust and long-lasting solution, ensuring safety and preventing future operational challenges.

Solutions

Our approach was systematic. We began with a rigorous surface preparation. Armed with our jet surface dryer, bobcats, and the lorry-mounted captive blaster 245-D, we laid the groundwork for the subsequent phases. Post-preparation, our team applied a combined waterproofing and anti-skid system, choosing the Emery 3-5mm aggregate for its proven efficacy. Weather unpredictability, often a significant impediment in such projects, was efficiently tackled. By deploying one of the UK’s only three vehicle-mounted jet surface dryers, we ensured the work’s momentum remained undeterred, irrespective of weather changes. Furthermore, we utilised specialised stripping methods for certain resistant coatings, while our captive shot blasting techniques ensured the surfaces were prepared to ensure adherance of subsequent systems.

Results

The outcomes were in line with our objectives. We managed to successfully complete the resurfacing of the linkspans, ensuring zero interruptions to the port’s day-to-day operations. Safety standards were enhanced, significantly reducing potential traction loss issues on the linkspans. With the project’s completion, the port now boasts a durable and efficient linkspan surface, poised to serve efficiently for years to come.
